Boardwalk Repair & Alteration Guide

To repair or alter your boardwalk you will need the following (available at most hardware stores and home centers)

Before you begin, please read instructions carefully.

Tools Needed

  • Vise Grip Locking Plier or similar gripping tool

  • Scissors or Small Knife

  • Propane Torch or Butane Cigarette Lighter

  • Small Putty Knife or Similar Tool with a Flat Surface

Burn through the middle of the exposed rope at the end of the walkway rather than cutting it. Burning prevents fraying if you plan to reuse the rope.

Step 1: Burn Through the Rope

Step 2: Remove the Slats and Spacers

Remove the slats and spacers from the rope. Lay them on the ground in the same design and position you want for the repaired walkway.

  • If shortening the walkway, remove extra slats.

  • If repairing,  replace damaged slats with new ones.

Step 3: Lace the Walkway

The rope will have a knot on one end and a "needle" on the other.

  1. Using the needle end, begin lacing the slats and spacers together on one side of the layout.

  2. Lace to the far end, then double back on the opposite side, lacing until you return to the start point. (See Figure 1)

Note: Doubling back allows for easier future repairs or changes.

Step 4: Secure the End

Pull the rope tight so all the slats and spacers fit nugly together

  • Do not overtighten-the rope will naturally shrink outdoors, creating a firm hold.

  • Use locking pliers to hold the rope in place. (See Figure 2)

Step 5: Knot & Finish the Rope

1. Tie a tight knot as close to the      locking pliers as possible

2. Cut the rope 3/4" to 1" from the knot.

3. Let the end fray slightly

4. Use a torch or lighter to melt the frayed end (do not burn)

5. Immediately flaten the melted end with a putty knife, matching the look of the factory knot at the other end.

6. Remove the locking pliers. (See Figure 3)

Important: Melting and flattening the rope end prevents the knot from untying.

CAUTION: Avoid melting or singeing the knot itself, as this can weaken the walkways structure.

WARNING: The molten rope is extremely hot and may release small, airborne fragments that can cause burns.

To Avoid Injury:

Wear protective glasses, gloves and a long-sleved shirt.

Keep your face and eyes at least 2 feet from the melted rope.

Do not touch the melted rope until it has cooled for at least 5 minutes.
